Russia's Vladimir Putin says "U.S. is a parasite"

While saying he was pleased that the U.S. finally reached a deal to raise the debt ceiling, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is attacking America as “a parasite” on the global economy because of the dollar’s dominance in the world financial markets.
“They are living beyond their means and shifting a part of the weight of their problems to the world economy,” Putin said in a speech on Monday at a pro-Kremlin youth forum north of Moscow, Reuters reported.
“They are living like parasites off the global economy and their monopoly of the dollar,” Putin added, using the word that Soviet leaders decades ago often reserved for refer to people who didn’t work or otherwise serve the communist.
Putin said he welcomed the deal to raise the debt ceiling, cut spending and possibly avert the downgrade of the U.S. credit rating.
“Thank god that they had enough common sense and responsibility to make a balanced decision,” he said. “If over there [in the United States] there is a systemic malfunction, this will affect everyone.”
Though “countries like Russia and China hold a significant part of their reserves in American securities,” he suggested they look elsewhere. “There should be other reserve currencies.”
